Aksel Nõmmela's season start will be delayed

Aksel Nõmmela (Wallonie Brussels) was disturbed by a lumbar injury just before the training camp in Calpe, Spain. After the gym training, the pain and swelling became so disturbing that the cyclist was forced to visit a local hospital. An MRI scan revealed a defective blood vessel that had leaked blood between the tissues. In medical language it is a hematoma.

"There is no other wise thing to do than just wait," says Nõmmela. “Cold and compress help. At some point, blood should disappear between tissues.”

Due to a healthy setback, it is certain that the team will not expel Nõmmela to the Saudi tour. The Oman tour, which was to follow, will not take place as the country is in mourning. On January 10 died Sultan Qaboos bin Said, Oman's longtime ruler.

Thus the beginning of the Nõmmela season is postponed to the end of February or even to the beginning of March. The first start is expected to be one of two Belgian classics - either Omloop Het Nieuwsblad or Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne.
