Emils Liepins debuts his new colours in Mallorca
Emils Liepins is one of the most talented Latvian riders of the last decade. He had a slow start in the professional cycling with the Latvian continental team Rietumu Delfin, but we consider him to be now one of the black horses of the professional peloton. We saw already during the past 2 years riding for One Pro Cycling and Wallonie-Brussels that he can win races and compete with the best in the classics.
He confirmed us that he will have an opportunity to shine: “Trek-Segafredo’s management is putting hopes on me in the sprints and classics, but at the same time i have to show them what i am capable of, as I’m a new guy at this level and in this team. I will share the sprinter’s role with Matteo Moschetti (Italian), he likes a bit more straight forward sprints and i like a bit harder and tricky races. I will be part of Trek Segafredo’s classics team in the spring too, we have a really strong line up and i hope that i can show my best there to confirm my potential to my directors.
Asking about which Grand Tour he will have in his calendar, Emils replied:” Definately not the Giro. My Sports Director Popovych confirmed me too that i have to show something at first and then we will see about the program i will have later in the year. Same time, i do want to participate in a Grand Tour, i think that normally a rider will achieve the next level after finishing a three week race”.
Emils confirmed us that he is well prepared and ready for the season:” I spent most of the winter training in Girona or in the team’s trainingcamps. It’s amazing how well structured and organised is Trek Segafredo, in Wallonie Brussels i already thought that its pretty good to have so much stuff around taking care of us, but this is another level here. We just have to concentrate on trainings. I must say that the Trek bike is super fast too”. Emils told us that living into the team was easy, as he had another Latvian of the team, Toms Skujins rooming with him in the first trainingcamp.”He helped me to understand the way of working in the team and as i didn’t know anybody at first, it was cool to have another Latvian guy around.”
Emils will start his racing season in Mallorca with Trofeo Felanitx (30.01) and Trofeo Playa de Palma - Palma (02.02). Before the classic’s season starts on 29th of February with Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, he will take part of the French 2.1 stage races Etoile de Bessege and Tour de La Provence. “ The first part of the season will be very busy,” confirmed the Latvian sprinter.
